Old Power Rankings

Our old power ratings were originally developed in 1999 by Mike Greenfield. They include both predictive and descriptive ratings. Depending on the sport, the old ratings typically need several game results for each team in order to calibrate effectively.

About Our Power Ratings

Our power ratings are based solely on objective data, primarily including game results, locations, and quantitative measures of opponent strength.

It is important to note that we do not explicitly adjust our ratings for player-level situations such as injuries or suspensions (or, likewise, for players returning after an absence). The algorithms measure teams solely on the basis of actual game results for the year.

Because the system creates a vast web of relationships between teams, one new game result can change the ratings of many teams, not just the two teams that played the game.
