Daily Fantasy Strategy: Back to Back Stacks In The Black

This is the ninth installment in David’s diary about playing one-day fantasy football for the first time. All other posts are listed in this blog section.

My new big tournament strategy of simply entering stacks against the worst defenses paid off again in Week 8.

There was no third-place finish in a huge tournament, but I did snag a 25x payout with one stack, which accounted for most of my profit for the week.

The TeamRankings Private Tournament

As I do every week, I also entered the TeamRankings private tournament (more info here) using the screen name teamrankings, as opposed to my personal account, tr_david.

For the second time in three weeks, I forgot to update the lineup Sunday morning, so we were stuck using my “from the gut” lineup I filled out earlier in the week as a space saver. This time, however, things worked out just fine — we finished in 22nd out of 189 entries.

Lineup Notes

Here are links to each of my lineups, with a few notes.

Main Head-to-Head and 50/50 Lineup
(132.32 pts, 15-7 H2H, 1 for 1 in 50/50’s, cashed in 0 of 3 tournaments, net +$5.60 on $32 in entry fees)

I haven’t wavered on my head-to-head strategy. I’m still starting with QB and RB, and working from there, and trying not to spend too much on wide receiver.

For some reason this week I did not use “Team Playing The Jaguars” as my defense in my top lineup. I’m not sure what I was thinking there. I did use the Dolphins in my second lineup, though, and some tournament lineups.

Second Head-to-Head and 50/50 Lineup (Version 1)
(126.94 pts, 2-3 H2H, 1 for 1 in 50/50’s, cashed in 0 of 1 tournaments, net -$3.20 on $14 in entry fees)

Second Head-to-Head and 50/50 Lineup (Version 2)
(151.14 pts, 5-0 H2H, cashed in 2 of 2 tournaments, net +$15.00 on $14 in entry fees)

On my second lineup, I couldn’t decide between these two combos:

  • WR Andre Johnson ($7000) & TE Jason Witten ($5700)
  • WR Greg Jennings ($5500) & TE Rob Gronkowski ($7200)

So, I ended up using each pairing on half of my second lineup entries. Gronkowski went off for 37.4 points, so I wish I had stuck to my guideline of being more willing to spend money on TE’s than on WR’s. As with the Dolphins above, I did use Gronk on some tournament lineups, and that worked out well.

Tournament Lineups

I entered five 3-player-stack lineups (plus two of the above lineups) in a large $2 tournament (5,746 entries), in the hopes that one would hit for a decent payout. I managed a 14th place finish with one entry, which accounted for most of my profit this week.

Here are the main ideas for each lineup, which I then tried to fill in around with solid values:

My tournament strategy this week was identical to last week. I anticipate I’ll keep using this until I run into a dry spell. Here’s the description of the strategy, in case you missed it.
