Our inaugural one-day fantasy football tournament on FanDuel was a lot of fun last week. See the results below, and props to adamhasu for outscoring 72 other TR users, including us!

To amp up the prize pool this week, we’re going to give away a free Football Season Pass to TeamRankings (a $249 value) to the winner of our Week 2 tournament, along with $1,000 in cash prizes from the contest.

Week 1 Tournament Results

adamhasu dominated the field in our inaugural Week 1 contest, riding big performances by Megatron, Le’Veon Bell, Vernon Davis, Steve Smith, and even Atlanta kicker Matt Bryant to rack up a score of 148.08, which was two points better than second place finisher nitecap.

Props to you, Adam, and we’ll be emailing you to set up your free Football Season Pass to TeamRankings!

To our relative surprise, we (teamrankings) ended up coming in fifth place with 136.72 points, after not having much time at all to do research for Week 1. (This was our first ever FanDuel NFL contest.) Luck definitely played a role in that result, but we’ll be writing a blog post that explains the strategy we ended up using for Week 1, to see what you all think about it. Hopefully it will at least stimulate some discussion.

Because of the guaranteed prize pool, nearly 70% of players doubled their money in our first contest! However, don’t be sad if you weren’t one of them. I actually entered the contest with a second entry, incognito, with what I thought was a foolproof strategy: Draft as many former Stanford players as possible, regardless of price or matchups. And as a result…one of you hosers is now walking around with my 10 bucks! Team Stanford vows its revenge in Week 2.

2014 Season Standings

Why You Should Play

One-day fantasy football is all the rage now, and it’s turned into a huge market. (The site we play on, FanDuel, is currently awarding over $10 million in prize money every week.) Coming into this football season, we were pretty much clueless about how to play and win at daily fantasy football. But with $10 million a week up for grabs, well…we wanted to learn. And quickly!

We also figured that many of our beloved TeamRankings users were probably curious about this whole daily fantasy thing too. FanDuel ads are all over the place right now, and tons of new people are starting to play. So why not use this as an opportunity to have some fun with our users, while playing and learning together?

So we got FanDuel to set up private, one-day fantasy football tournaments just for TeamRankings users, by invitation only.

To keep the focus on fun, our tourneys are low stakes ($10 entry fee) contests known as “double ups,” where all you need to do is finish in the top half of the standings to double your money. It’s the friendliest format for new players just getting their feet wet, like us.

FanDuel has even agreed to waive their typical small fee for hosting these contests, meaning that 100% of the entry fees in our private tourneys go straight back to the winners as prize money.

Finally, we’ll be entering all of these tournaments ourselves, of course, so here’s your chance to beat up on the TR Nerds and talk trash about it on a weekly basis! Come play with us this week…
