Football Pick’em Pool Picks: Upgrades & Improvements For 2014

After several years of success blogging about picks and strategy for football office pools, including taking first place in the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference NFL pick’em contest, in 2013 we decided to take things to the next level.

We released the world’s most sophisticated picks and analysis for football pools, now part of our expanded lineup of Office Pool Picks products. We spent a big chunk of the summer working on improvements to this product, and we’re excited to announce the latest developments.

For those unfamiliar with our football pool picks, our approach uses millions of computer simulations to identify the picking strategy that gives you the best chance to win your football office pool or handicapping contest. We also customize picks based on key factors like your pool’s size, format, and scoring system.

This data driven approach has resulted in an outstanding long term track record, and it delivered up to a 10x edge to our customers last football season. So we continue to invest in improving our technology, analytics, and product for football pool picks.

Here’s a rundown of what’s new this year, for both our returning and prospective customers:

Football Pool Picks: New Features In 2014

  • Alternative pick sets. In addition to our recommended picks, we now show two alternative pick sets for all spread pools and all game winner pools with weekly prizes. In season-long game winner pools, alternative pick sets start showing with five weeks left to play. These alternative pick sets can be used by customers playing multiple entries in a pool, or if you just can’t “get on board” with our recommended picks.
  • Full season performance tracking of all pick sets. You can now see how all of our pick sets (including alternatives) have performed every single week, based on your pool’s specific scoring system.
  • Support for combined NFL + college football pools. We now provide picks for pools where you need to pick both NFL and college games every week, or just during some weeks.
  • Support for “Pick Six” style pools. We now provide picks for pools where you get to choose a subset of games to pick each week, from a larger list of available games. So we support pools like the LVH SuperContest, where each week you need to pick the point spread winner of any five NFL games of your choosing.
  • Full customization of confidence point values. We now support any possible confidence point structure for confidence pools. If your NFL pool always uses 16 confidence points for your highest confidence pick, even during bye weeks, we’ve got you covered. If you’re in a pool where all picks are worth one point except for a “bonus game” that’s worth five points, we’ve got you covered.
  • Optional customization of opponent pick projections. If your pool features a lot of people with strong biases toward the same team or conference, you can now manually adjust our opponent pick projections to factor in those biases.
  • Weekly prize vs. season prize strategy guidance. If you’re in a pool with both weekly and season prizes, every week we now run calculations to determine whether it’s better for you to focus on winning weekly prizes or to chase a season prize. Our calculations take into account your current position in the pool standings and your pool’s payout structure.
  • Redesigned pool detail entry interface. We’ve completely redesigned how we ask you for information about your pool(s), moving from one long page of form fields to a series of quick, easy to answer questions.
  • Redesigned Data Grid. We’ve improved and expanded the data we publish on matchups, and made it so you can see both NFL and college game predictions and public picking trends in the same table for comparison.
  • Access to Data Grids for past weeks. You can also now go back in time and view Data Grids for any past weeks of the season.

There’s more, too, and these are just the new features. Make sure to check out the Football Pool Picks page for more details. Or if you’re ready, you can sign up now.
